Magsaysay for Sainath

"As the economy surges, matters that call for the urgent attention of the public and government are ignored in favour of film starlets and beauty queens, the stock market and India's famed IT boom . Sainath has taken a different path. Believing that 'journalism is for people, not for shareholders', he has doggedly covered the lives of those who have been left behind", reads the citation of the Magasaysay prize.

The Hindu, the daily Mr. Sainath works with, is arguably the best Indian newspaper

Talking about the most important issues that my government faces: my FM never seems worried over tens of farmers committing suicides daily , but the BSE sensex falling by 500 makes him lose his sleep, India's loss in the first round of World Cup cricket is the prime concern of my agriculture minister and my leader of opposition is occupied with the thought of how he can manage cross voting to get his 85 yrs old candidate installed as the next President.
