Bilaskhani Todi

I have gotten into this weird habit of listening to Bilaskhani Todi at any time of day!

Main culprit : Niladri Kumar's Dharohar album and 'Koyaliya Kahe Karat Pukaar' by Ajay Pohankar. It started with Prabhakar Karekar's concert in Akashwani Sangeet Sammelan (in Dec. 97, I guess). Veena Sahsrabuddhe's todi is awsome ('Suno more saiyaan'- record by Faountain i.e. Alurkar music house ).

This raaga belongs to Bhairavi thaat. That's why sounds somewhat similar to Bhairavi. Another raga from the same family: Komal Rishabh Asawari (I am not sure if I like this name more or the raaga).

Jitendra Abhisheki's clip on this site ('tyaj re abhimaan jaan guniyan ko') is marvelous.

You should try and get Rashid Khan's khayals in this raga:

1. Kahe Karat Mosey Jhagda - Madhya Lay, Tritaal

2. Jaa Jaa Re Jaa Kagwa - Drut Lay, Tritaal

These are amazing and will just add to your experience, given your obsession with Bilaskhani. This happens to be high up on my favorites list as well, along with Bhimpalasi, Malkauns and Darbari Kanada

I also recommend Ajoy Chakrabarty's Bilashkhani Todi. I am hooked to it. My ritual of late has been to listen to his Hamsadhwani followed by his Bilashkhani Todi

I love Bilaskhani Todi and am so enamored of it that I listen to it at any time of the day. Sometimes, I wake up at 4 a.m. to listen to it being played on the Radio.

I'm currently listening to the Gundecha Brothers' dhrupad on Bilaskhani Todi. I heard about the story behind the raga, Miyan Tansen's son composing it while grieving at his father's funeral, and the hand of Tansen's corpse waving in encouragement and acceptance. Well! That's a damn cool story and it gives a great context for the raga. The Gundecha Brothers' certainly bring out that deep melancholy. Up next is Wasifuddin Dagar's Bhimpalasi for the mid-afternoon. :)

What to say about the sensations rendered by divine melancholic Bilaskhani Todi?... Music is beyond expression by words.. just to admit that I v also fallen into this divine trap just after listening to Niladri's rendition..

Also plz give your ears to Pt TejendraNarayan Majumder 's sarod ..
